Android Messages Receives a New Dark Mode with Material Theme Design Update

Google has recently introduced the Material Theme design for a number of its apps, and some are inline to get the update. The latest app from Google to receive the Material Theme design is the Android Messages.


The Android Messages has just gotten an update which is the v3.5. The latest update which brings a refreshed design and Google’s Product Sans Font to the Messages. It also carries an all-white design with the highly anticipated ‘dark mode’ for the Android Messages.

The first significant change the user will notice in the update is that the blue coloured action bar is no longer available; instead, it has been replaced with an all-white background. The latest update brings a lot of white to the messaging app. the title of the ‘Messages’ has now been shifted to the centre, this step brings the Android Messages app in line with the other Material Theme design apps like the Google News.

Another major change which the user will notice is that the floating action button at the bottom right corner doesn’t have any ‘+’ symbol. The ‘+’ symbol has now been replaced with a ‘Start chat’ text labels rather than opting for icons. With this latest update, the action button now disappears when the user starts scrolling. Selecting the Start chat label now opens up a contact picking screen which also has got some minor tweaks.

On the other hand, the conversation window is now completely white, while the contact icon is now in a pastel colour. Users will now be able to see received messages in a grey bubble and sent messages in a blue bubble.


Additionally, the latest update will introduce the dark mode to the Android Messages like the ‘Messages for web’ which already have the dark mode from the beginning. Users have been a long time for the dark mode for Messages on Android, and finally, it has made its way to the devices.

Google also introduced the option to enable the ‘dark mode’ from the overflow menu which is located on the top right corner. When selected, the look of the app changes instantly with the font colours reversed for better appeal.

The update has already started rolling out, and it is expected to reach all the users over a period of coming days.
