Nokia 8 with dual rear cameras & 4GB RAM: Specs & Price

HMD Global, the company with the official permission to put the Nokia brand on its smartphones, has finally launched the Nokia 8 Android smartphone in India after a long time of teasers, leaks and press shots.

The Nokia 8 is the flagship smartphone in HMD Global’s series of Android smartphones that contains the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6. The smartphone was launched with the 3G variant of the Nokia 3310 feature phone by the company at a recent event in the country.

Nokia 8 Review

Software & Camera

The Nokia 8 runs on stock Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box, and like the other Nokia Android smartphones, it will be upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo later as announced by the company.

The smartphone features a dual camera setup at the rear, consisting of a 13MP primary Colour camera with OIS and a 13MP Monochrome secondary camera dedicated for black and white photography. It uses ZEISS optics and has a 1.12um pixel size, f/2.0 aperture, 76.9-degree wide-angle lens, PDAF, IR range-finder and a dual-tone LED flash which provides adequate lighting for photography.

The phone sports a 13MP auto-focus camera with 78.4-degree wide-angle lens, ZEISS optics, PDAF, 1.12um pixel size and a f/2.0 aperture.

Design & Display

The Nokia 8 comes with a 5.3-inch Quad HD (2560 * 1440) LCD display with a 554ppi pixel density and sculpted Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. It has a maximum brightness level of 700 nits which is far higher than I’ve seen in most flagship smartphones, meaning the display would perform excellently even under direct sunlight.

The smartphone has an organic full aluminium unibody design that is made from 6000 series aluminium and a mirror finish. The form factor is the same as the other Nokia Android smartphones, but this one uses a physical home button in which a fingerprint sensor is embedded, in addition to two capacitive navigation buttons. The phone comes with a thickness of just 7.9 millimetres.

Memory & Performance

Like many other flagship smartphones, the Nokia 8 is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform processor with an Adreno 540 GPU which renders graphics on the phone and assists the processor in some functions.

It comes with 4GB of DDR4X RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.1 internal storage which can be expanded up to 256GB using an external microSD card.

Battery & Connectivity

The Nokia 8 packs a 3090mAh battery and, as you would expect of a flagship smartphone, has fast charging tech from Qualcomm (Quick Charge 3.0). It comes with a hybrid dual Nano SIM slot and supports 4G VoLTE networks.

The smartphone has a barometer onboard for determining altitude. It offers advanced connectivity options like Wi-Fi 802.11ac (MIMO), Bluetooth 5.0, GPS/ GLONASS, NFC. and comes with a USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 1 port that aids charging and allows you to transfer files easily across devices.

The Nokia 8 comes with three microphones and uses the Nokia OZO 360-degree spatial surround sound system, offering an immersive audio experience.
