Some time ago I wrote an article on likely phone features that may trend in 2019, and I mentioned the Sharp dual notch feature. While many like the in screen camera cutout (formerly in-display camera) and in-display fingerprint are established already, the dual notch happens to be the most neglected feature.
Design and Display
Technology giants, Sharp are keen on retaining the old Fingerprint-in-front design feature in a world where large bezel-less displays are trending. The only way to achieve this without using ugly bezels is to use a notch cut out at bottom too.
The dual notch is the first noticeable feature when you pick up the Sharp Aquos R3. There is a top waterdrop notch that houses the front camera and the bottom notch that houses the fingerprint sensor which doubles as the home button.
At the back, there is vertical dual camera cutout placed at the top left corner.
For display, the device has a 6.2-inch display IGZO panel. IGZO (Indium, Gallium, Zinc and Oxygen) Display gives almost twice the resolution found in TFT (the Aquos R3 has 3120 x 1440 pixel resolution) and consumes lower battery. The display also comes with an insane 120Hz refresh rate, mostly found in gaming smartphones.
The Sharp Aquos R3 has a triple camera set up; one front-facing camera and two rear-facing cameras. Sitting in the top notch is a 16.3MP selfie shooter while the rear cut out houses a 12.2 MP module and 20 MP module.
Sharp has different job specifications for both cameras as the 12 MP module is for still photography while the 20MP module is reserved for video recording. The cameras are AI based as there are AI features like AI Live Shutter and AI Live Story.
Hardware Components (Processor and Memory)
The Sharp Aquos R3 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC clocked at 2.84 GHz in charge of everything. Adreno 460 is in charge of graphics.
For memory, the is a 6 GB LPDDR4X RAm clocked at 2.1 GHz. There is also 128 GB of onboard storage space.
Battery and OS
The only drawback in this device is the 3200mAh battery powering a 5G device with 3120 x 1440 pixel resolution. Even the 11W Qi wireless charge support doesn’t cover this. The device runs in Android Pie. Price has not been announced.
